The Fivefold Colors in Harmony: Gogyō Wagashi Manju
— Wa: Resonance with All Things —

Gogyō Wagashi Manju seeks to offer an opportunity to experience, through all five senses, the philosophy of “Wa — Resonance with All Things” through Meguri no Goshiki: Gogyō Wagashi Manju.

Gogyō Wagashi Manju is a handmade Japanese confection created with rare Kyushu Kirishima-grown Tōki (Japanese angelica), nurtured amid the rich natural environment of the Kirishima mountain range, together with organic Reishi mushroom, carefully crafted to pursue a flavor that harmonizes with the gifts of nature.

All things in the universe influence one another, circulate, and resonate with one another, weaving together a greater harmony.

The ancient philosophy of the Five Phases (Gogyō)—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—which expresses the cyclical transformations of nature, has been embodied here in five distinct colors, fragrances, and flavors, each represented as an individual manju.
With each bite, we invite you to reflect upon the workings of nature and, at the same time, to quietly turn your awareness toward the resonance between your own mind and body.
May this offer you a moment to step away from the noise and bustle of everyday life and return, even briefly, to the harmony within—the essence of “Wa.”

In The Book of Tea, Okakura Kakuzō (Tenshin) understood the spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony as an appreciation of the imperfect, and as a way of discovering beauty within imperfection.

The spirit, Gogyō Wagashi Manju does not seek perfect uniformity.
Rather, it embraces the distinctive character of each of its five colors, fragrances, and flavors, together with the subtle “yuragi” — the natural variations and gentle fluctuations inherent in nature itself.

Through their differences, the five manju resonate with one another and complement one another, coming together to form a greater harmony.None of the five is intended to stand complete on its own. It is precisely because they differ from one another that they can resonate, complement, and complete one another.

Through their forms and flavors, we hope you may quietly sense the essence of “Wa”—the harmony and cyclical interconnectedness of all things:
“It is precisely because something is incomplete that it can resonate with and be complemented by others.”

We sincerely hope that, through this experience of Gogyō Wagashi Manju, you will discover a moment of resonance with nature through all five senses.

When I was a child, my grandmother would make simple tsubu-an manju—steamed buns filled with sweet red bean paste. Their humble yet unforgettable taste has remained quietly in the depths of my heart to this day.

It was from this small longing—to recreate that nostalgic flavor with my own hands—that I began making manju.

For this occasion, I have created Meguri no Gosai: Five-Element Wa Manju, inspired by the wish to share, with as many people as possible, even a little of that cherished taste I remember from childhood.

In today’s increasingly competitive society, I sometimes wonder whether we have gradually, and perhaps without realizing it, lost sight of our harmony with nature—the spirit of Wa.

With this in mind, I have brought together the familiar taste of traditional manju with the ancient Chinese philosophy of the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—which expresses the natural cycles and harmony of the world.

Each of the five manju has been made with care and carries its own color and flavor, representing the blessings of nature, the changing seasons, and the resonance that arises between people.

A new “Wa” within a taste that brings back cherished memories.

As you savor the five manju, I hope you may also take a quiet moment to reflect upon your own memories, sensations, and personal connections with nature and with one another.

It would be my greatest pleasure to welcome you all and to share this small journey of taste, memory, and harmony with you.
